Learning by doing: this has always been one of the strong points of the courses proposed by MEDIA Salles. It is the same spirit with which all the participants at DGT 2015, guided by Linda Arbanová, head of Aeroškola devoted themselves to creating a cartoon animation. They all had great fun and were so enthusiastic, that they no longer have any doubts on how useful initiatives like this can be for children, young people and teachers, with the objective of forming the audiences of the future. "Audience building," then - not only as a catchword but as a tool for arousing interesting in the cinema and its languages and forming aware audiences. The future of the cinema and the audiences of tomorrow were the main theme of the talk by Michal Bregant, Director of the National Film Archive, who welcomed the participants to the Ponrepo. This cinema, at the very heart of Prague's historical city centre, and its "summer headquarters", housed in a monument of industrial architecture - the Žižkov freight yard - is the showcase for the immense heritage of Czech and international films conserved in the Archive. This prestigious institution is committed not only to preserving the memory of the past but also to making it accessible and - even more so - for increasing the overall number of cinema-lovers. To reach this objective, the Archive has launched various initiatives ranging from the "midnight screenings" to courses and "nights at the museum". "We believe in the future," is the message that Bregant shared with the course participants of DGT 2015.
Dave Monk - CEO of EDCF - who, with passion and technical competence, outlined the characteristics of the offer and type of exhibition for the coming ten years - also believes that stories capable of involving and moving people will continue to come to life on the big screen: if, on the one hand, the possibility of watching films will increase, both inside and outside the home, on the other hand, the need for communality, which draws people outside their homes in search of a shared experience, will not decrease. Technological evolution offers cinemas the tools necessary to continue ensuring that the quality offered to audiences will go on improving, both in terms of images and in terms of sound, not to mention comfort in the theatres, added services and variety of content.
It is obvious that exhibitors will have to well understand changes in the behaviour of the public, starting out, for example, from the way they obtain information on programming. In the same way, the flexibility made possible by digital technology must be exploited to the full: in order to achieve this, distribution, too, must prove capable of moving beyond its habitual schemes. The big screen will thus succeed in guaranteeing a unique experience. The participants at DGT 2015 had the umpteenth proof of the cinema's power when they visited the museum dedicated to Karel Zeman and the works it contains. Works which - as Jakub Matějka, Director of the Museum, recalled - thanks to digitalization, are now available internationally for wide use on the big screen.
