A change at the top: Jens Rykaer back at the helm of MEDIA Salles

Jens Rykaer (European Film College – DK), a past President of MEDIA Salles from 2001 to 2004, returns to the helm of the Association. He succeeds Domenico Dinoia (also President of Fice, Italy), who, although obliged to anticipate the end of his term of office, for personal reasons, will continue to be part of the Executive Committee. At the meeting in Cannes yesterday, the Committee appointed another member as Vice President, Walter Vacchino (also Vice President of Anec, Italy), responsible for relations with the Italian Government.

There were new developments for the MEDIA Salles’ General Meeting, too – which also took place yesterday – where two members – the Finnish and Danish exhibitors’ associations – were represented respectively for the first time by Ismo Määttä and Kim Pedersen, recently appointed Presidents of the two associations.
Cannes was also an opportunity for meetings with the various Institutions: the heads of MEDIA Salles were able to discuss the Association’s future prospects with the Director General for the Cinema at the Italian Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Gaetano Blandini, and with Costas Daskalakis, Head of the MEDIA unit in EACEA, the European Commission’s Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency.

Following these important meetings, it’s back to work immediately on the ongoing projects: tomorrow, again at Cannes, there will be a meeting of the Work Group of the “European Cinema Yearbook”, chaired by Joachim Ph. Wolff, Honorary President of The Netherlands’ Cinematographic Federation and Scientific Advisor of the MEDIA Salles’ Yearbook. The objective: to perfect the tools for producing the new edition of the Yearbook.

MEDIA Salles, a project operating within the framework of the European Union's MEDIA Programme, with the support of the Italian Government, fosters theatrical distribution of European audiovisual products, both by high profile campaigns involving Europe's cinema exhibitors and by initiatives to raise the visibility of European productions with industry players and potential audiences, creating specialized information channels on a global scale. Thus the current initiatives from MEDIA Salles dovetail in a program with a triple focus – training, promotion and information – and maximum combined effect.
