The
Impact of Multiplexes on the Cinema Market and on their Environment
11.30 am, June 15th 1998, Amsterdam
This seminar seeks to address two different
themes: the impact of multiplex cinemas on the cinema market, and their
impact on the urban environment. For the purposes of the seminar, multiplex
cinemas can be considered to include all new build cinemas with a large
number of screens. Some conversions of existing cinemas to a multi-screen
format have similar impacts but not all do.
Impact on the Cinema Market
Among the issues which might be addressed
are
-
How far do new cinemas create new audiences?
How much of their market is at the expense of existing cinemas?
-
The effect on competition, especially
on independent exhibitors. Does this lead to a reduction in the range of
films shown?
-
Looking past short-term concentration
in the market, is it possible that ultimately there will be greater competition
among exhibitors than now as more multiplexes are built?
-
The effect on distribution. With more
screens available, there is evidence that distributors are widening releases
in the hope of greater revenues. Will the difficulties of smaller distributors
be made worse by this?
-
Is there, indeed, a concentration of admissions
and box office on an ever-smaller number of films as high marketing expenditures
creates a "winner takes all" environment?
-
Where do European films fit into the picture?
Can they find a place in American-owned multiplexes, for example?
Impact on the Urban Environment
Some key issues are
-
Whether multiplexes can succeed in city
centre locations as well as ones on the outskirts. What are the essential
characteristics that locations must have for these cinemas to work?
-
Are these different from other cinemas,
or do all cinemas need the same things, for example, safety, ease of access?
-
Where cinemas have left city centres,
they are usually following shopping. How important is it for cinemas to
be in the same location as shopping facilities? Are there synergies? If
so what?
-
How important are the synergies in city
centre entertainment locations such as bars and restaurants? Do these have
to be re-created when cinemas move out of town?
-
What about consumers? Is there a difference
between those who prefer city centre cinemas and those who travel to cinemas
on the outskirts, in terms of "lifestyle", the types of other facilities
they like to have present, and the type of trip they make to the cinema
(cinema only, cinema + shopping, cinema + restaurant)?
-
Similarly, should government be focussing
on entertainment in trying to keep city centres lively. Or would it make
more sense to concentrate on keeping shops in the centre?
-
Some cinema-goers prefer smaller, more
intimate cinemas. Can such cinemas continue to form part of the urban environment
alongside "category killers"?

L’impatto
Amsterdam – Cinema Expo International,
15 giugno 1998
Intervento introduttivo di
Karsten-Peter Grummit (Dodona Research)
Con questo seminario in apertura dell’evento
"Focus on Europe", volto a promuovere l’esercizio cinematografico in Europa
-
In quale misura i nuovi
complessi creano pubblico addizionale? Quanta parte del loro mercato è
alle spese dei cinema già esistenti?
-
Come influiscono i multiplex
-
Come si collocano i film
europei in questo contesto? Trovano, per esempio, un posto nei multiplex
di proprietà americana?
L’impatto sullo sviluppo
urbano
-
I multiplex possono avere
commerciali e ristorazione?
-
-
Quali politiche dovrebbero
adottare le autorità e le istituzioni pubbliche? Focalizzare la
propria attenzione sull’offerta di divertimento cercando di mantenere attivo
il centro città? Oppure tentare di mantenere i negozi in città?
-
Alcuni spettatori preferiscono
cinema più piccoli, "di nicchia". Sale di questo tipo possono continuare
a far parte dello scenario urbano?
