Talk by Patricia Fontvieille - Forum Cinéma - Chambéry (France)

My name is Patricia Fontvieille and for twelve years now my husband and I have been looking after two arthouse cinemas in a problem area of Chambéry. I am here to speak about our latest project with young people: the production of a short, 18-minute, 35 mm. film.  Before I do this, however, I should like briefly to set this latest experience, which dates back to last summer, against the background of our overall project.  The production is the result of  careful work in favour of young people that has been undertaken ever since the opening of our cinemas in 1968 (special programming in collaboration with the local youth-care authorities, cut-price tickets, programmes for schools, collaboration with classes doing cinema studies in the nearby high school).  Programming for children (apart from the schools programmes) offers between 30 and 40 films a year.  Its success (the number of tickets sold has tripled in 12 years) derives from the varied range of films offered, matching demand with showing times, the low cost of the tickets, the spectators’ faith in the quality and interest value of the films shown.  We realised very early on that in order to approach young people between 13 and 18 years of age who did not come to our cinemas except on school visits, we had to step outside the area of programming.  Since 1995, we have taken advantage of the opportunity to produce one short film per year within the framework of the “Summer at the Cinema” initiative, generously backed by the Chambéry municipality in terms of both financial help and location.
In ’95 we made “La 101ème marche”, by Jacques Hugon - 10 mins., 16 mm.
In ’96 “Une Journée de rêve” by Claude Philippot - 18 mins., 16 mm.
In ’97 “Les Fleurs de L’Algérien”, by Nader Hommayoun, from Marguerite Duras - 10 mins., 16 mm.
In ’98 “Rue Royale”, by Emile Assier, from Marcel Proust - 18 mins., 35 mm.
Each year around one hundred young people (120 this year) are involved in the operation at various levels (script, acting, technical roles).
Each year improvements are made, as well as organisational modifications (this year casting was organised, the creation of a story-board by the youngsters, collaboration with local public transport, assistance from a high school, participation by fifteen or so adults).
This summer’s film was freely adapted from an early work by Marcel Proust. The writing work consisted mainly in the transposition of the situations in the short story from one age to another.  It was filmed in super 16.  For the first time we have a 35 m.m. copy which allows for better coverage in cinemas, whilst maintaining our objective for it to be shown on television.
After four years of work at a local level, during which we have become familiar with the various phases of production, we hope that our next experience will allow us to step beyond the boundaries of our home town.  We feel that we are ready for an exchange and would like to organise meetings between our own young people and those of  a neighbouring town, with a view to a co-production, in both artistic and technical terms.
This means that we are at present looking for other cinemas interested in working in partnership with us.

Prima però vorrei rapidamente collocare quest’ultima esperienza, che risale all’estate scorsa, all’interno del nostro percorso.
