Europe gets together in the cinema:
a week of European cinema in 100 towns
Report on the events carried out in
November 1992, June 1993, November 1993 and November
1994
Analysis
of the four events shows:
-
the involvement of 438
cinemas in 18 European countries;
-
the highly satisfactory number of films
circulated: more than 300 each time, including around 100 coproductions;
-
that all 18 countries taking part in the MEDIA Programme were present as
producers and further
10 countries were present as coproducers;
-
the sinergy developed
with other Projects of the MEDIA Programme and Eurimages of the Council
of Europe.
The
results of the initiative to date show that "Europe gets together in the
cinema" is a valid means of:
-
encouraging access for European product to screen, especially in areas
outside major cities or the arthouse circuit;
-
giving cinema theatres the opportunity to show less known European film
and thus to address new segments of cinema-goers and consolidate the loyalty
of more discerning audiences;
-
estabilishing new relations between exhibitors and distributors, with the
aim of increasing the presence of European films on screens.
