Talk by Rosa Ferro - Cinema Fantarca - Bari (Italy)

The Cinema Fantarca has been running since 1985 in a suburban district of Bari, strongly characterised by both small- and large-scale crime - the San Paolo district - where it has re-cycled the premises of an old porno-cinema.  From the very beginning the children and adolescents living in the area were the focus of attention by the operators of the Centre, leading to the organisation of permanent creative laboratories for young people at risk, with the aim of offering both recreational and educational opportunities suitable for youngsters, serving as alternatives to life on the streets, billiards or the sale of contraband cigarettes.  Within only a few years, the high level of participation and public support for the Fantarca, due to the educational and artistic results achieved in these laboratories, brought the Centre to the attention of the local and national media (L’Espresso, L’Unità, Paese Sera, il Manifesto). This provided the opportunity for developing the quantity and quality of the activities, which are no longer restricted to the San Paolo district but extend to the whole of Bari and province. Moreover it allowed production laboratories, international film weeks and children’s theatre to be started, with a constant wealth of events, guests, films and shows suitable for a younger audience. Finally, in October 1996, the centre was recognised by MEDIA Salles as a member of the Euro Kids Network. It is of great importance that this recognition should be given to a structure operating in an environment where there is constant child abuse.

Up to the present, the Fantarca has held:

It has also produced: In 1996 the Fantarca is included in the European circuit of cinema theatres for young people “Euro Kids Network”, supported by the MEDIA Programme of the European Union and the Italian Government.
