Venues in Tallinn
Located in the very centre of Tallinn, Kino Artis opened its doors less than two years ago, in October 2009. The purely art-house 2-screen cinema is managed by Tallinnfilm, the main film production company from Soviet era, now entirely dedicated to the maintenance and restoration of its archives and developing film culture in Estonia by exhibiting and distributing mostly European content. These objectives were important from year 2004 on, when Tallinnfilm began its exhibition activities in cinema Sõprus in the old town of Tallinn, being awarded with the best Young Audience Activities by Europa Cinémas in 2005. To improve the technical quality of the screening and widen the scale of films, the cinema moved to brand-new facilities in Solaris Centre. Kino Artis became a member of Europa Cinémas network in 2011.
Kino Artis has two screening halls (181 and 72 seats) with 35mm and video projection providing an ideal meeting place for people interested in specialised programming and film events. Reel-to-reel projection is enabled to screen archive prints. The signature Cinema Experience sound system comes from Meyer Sound.
The repertoire of Kino Artis consists of European award-winning films, documentaries, children's programmes, premieres of Estonian films and various film weeks and festivals. Signature film series that Kino Artis organises are "Freaked Out" - programme of cult-classics that have never been screened in Estonia, "Literary Classics in the Cinema" - film adaptations of compulsory literature for school children, and "Animation Ark for Toddlers" - short films and games for kids. The premises of Kino Artis include cafeteria, children's area and gallery as well as internet lounge and art-house video shop for the enjoyment of film friends.
