Discovering the newest films set in Sicily: a mini-festival in Taormina

Five audiovisual works of various types make up the programme of this brief but intense mini-festival. Films that differ in genre, language, their view of real life and their narrative vocation. But all extremely clear and effective in repaying the thorough search for quality that animates and characterizes the support measures for production promoted by the Special Office for Cinema and Audiovisuals / Sicily Film Commission, operating in the Sector for Tourism, Sport and Entertainment of Sicily's Regional Authorities. A search that cannot fail to acknowledge and accompany the talent of young, emerging authors, as in the cases of Piero Messina with L'attesa and Leandro Picarella with Triokala. Two different works - the former narrative, the latter documentary - extremely personal, sharing perhaps the same sensitivity in imagining and building a dialogue with the part of Sicily that hosts their stories. A Sicily that assumes the contours of Palermo in the moving, bitter-sweet memory that Franco Maresco, with his Gli uomini di questa città io non li conosco - Vita e Teatro di Franco Scaldati, dedicates to one of the most important authors and actors on the scene of contemporary theatre in the Sicilian chef-lieu. Neither do Seconda Primavera by Francesco Calogero and Due Sicilie by Alessandro Piva fail to address the territory. The former links the characters' progress towards maturity to a non lieu and to the changing seasons, the latter challenges diachronic evolution to pursue those little fault lines in which changes and "little landslides" occur in a land that has always been the guardian and hostage of a statue-like identity.
