Romano Fattorossi,

The presentation of the StatisticalYearbook’s new edition has become an occasion for reflecting on the future prospects of the European cinema industry and for locating the priority areas for action by public authorities and organisations which, like MEDIA Salles, are working towards a revival of the audiovisual sector in Europe. The
1998 Yearbook certainly provides many points for reflection.
Particularly from the point of view of the organisation of the contents, which have again seen the introduction of significant innovations, readers will also discover routes by which they can come to grips with questions that are crucial for the future of the cinema industry in Europe. This seventh edition of the Yearbook has, for example, developed the section dedicated to Central and Eastern European countries and those of the Mediterranean Rim, presenting comparative tables showing basic indicators, permitting an evaluation to be made of the health and efficiency of this sector. It also gives space to a section regarding the “multiplex”, providing the most complete and up-to-date figures currently available, in order to understand the success of this type of cinema, which also represents a different sort of “cinema consumer trend”. By means of these choices regarding the contents of the study, it has been MEDIA Salles’ intention to develop the potential contained in the body of data accumulated over the years, as well as to present new information which may contribute towards providing an answer to the increasingly difficult questions confronting those who endeavour to understand the situation of cinema exhibition in the new millennium. We are faced with a European cinema industry characterised by extremes: an increase in audiences in the West, a sharp drop in cinema-going and the industrial structure itself - although to varying degrees - in various Central and Eastern European countries, the consolidation of the “multiplex” model, re-location of quality cinemas. In this situation work in research, information and in-depth study is becoming increasingly important, in order to inform choices at a national and international level. A considerable part of MEDIA Salles’ work has been concerned with analysing questions of vital importance to exhibitors, not only through the Yearbook, but by means of initiatives that have included the round table, “The impact of multiplex on the cinema industry and on urban life”, organised in Amsterdam on 15 June 1998, which brought together over 500 exhibitors from all over Europe. The impact of the multiplex on the market and on the urban network, the re-location of the cinema theatre in the offer of leisure-time activities, the effects of concentration and integration, the globalisation of the audiovisual market, the appearance of new technologies and the increasing variety of ways in which films are consumed, the European cinema and its extension beyond the countries of production and overseas: these are the themes that MEDIA Salles has addressed and where we consider it essential for deeper studies to be made. For these reasons it is to be hoped that the next phase of intervention by the Commission in the audiovisual sector will foresee incorporating a policy on specific financing for research. Boosting this line of activity seems to us to be one way of remaining faithful to those aims, which, in the context of MEDIA I, were our criteria for setting up MEDIA Salles, a decision supported by the associations of cinema and art cinema exhibitors in Europe1: to put the movie theatre in first place, to demonstrate how essential theatre screening is for the commercial life and success of a film, to emphasise the immense significance of the European “theatrical system” and its relative independence within all the components of the audiovisual industry, to promote the exhibition of European productions in movie theatres. This is the core around which MEDIA Salles has centred its initiatives and its projects from 1992 up to the present day, all of which look towards the approaching millenium: together with research and supply of information, the promotion of European films outside their home countries and the co-ordination of the efforts of those who are working towards creating interest in young people for “cinema at the cinema” and awareness of the richness of European film production. This is the framework for all the initiatives developed by MEDIA Salles over the past few years. Together
with the Yearbook, the European Cinema On-line Database is the information
tool that MEDIA Salles acquired in 1995. The Database, which was originally
intended to facilitate contacts between players in the field and to promote
the spread of European films, is now able to present, over Internet, 3
200 recently produced films and to offer information on 6 000 production,
distribution and export companies, together with data on movie theatres
and exhibitors.
