Dear Readers,

Elisabetta Brunella we are pleased to present a new initiative from MEDIA Salles: the creation of a jury of female exhibitors. It has been designed to provide a thoughtful consideration of the sensitivities and interests of female moviegoers, but also to provide an opportunity for discussion among women who manage or program cinemas.

We believe that when jurors get together to choose the best film - for themselves and for their audience - to justify their choices, to discuss and even disagree, at the same time they find a great opportunity to exchange experiences and expertise. That's why, since the first edition, we've wanted the jury to bring together people with diverse backgrounds and roles, and we believe we've hit the right path.

In this issue, we're also taking a trip to Berlin to share another insight from Cinema Vision 2030.

As always, we hope you enjoy the reading,

Elisabetta Brunella
Secretary General of MEDIA Salles

The Women Exhibitors' Choice - The Jury by MEDIA Salles

MEDIA Salles has just created a new jury that has the distinctive feature of being made up of women involved in the management and programming of movie theatres.

The Women Exhibitors' Choice - The Jury by MEDIA Salles will collaborate with important festivals in Italy and abroad, bringing a specific look that combines sensitivity to womens’ cinema and attention to the audience of theatres.

The jury will make its debut on the occasion of the Sguardi Altrove Film Festival (Milan, Italy) which, this year in its thirty-second edition, once again puts in the foreground the promotion and dissemination of female-directed cinema and the interest in cinematographies far from the usual distribution patterns.

The Jury

Cinema Beltrade, Milano - Monica Naldi, President

Cinema Astra, Como - Grazia Villa

Cinema Incontro, Besnate (VA) - Monica Piacentini and Cinzia Ciardiello

"Sguardi Altrove" International Women's Film Festival: the first Women Exhibitors' Choice award goes to "Sudan, remember us"

29 March 2025

The winning film, well beyond the conventional limits of simple documentation, succeeds in a surprising and virtuous synthesis, as sometimes the best cinema can do, of different artistic forms.

The staging of the struggles of an entire generation of young people through their songs, their murals, the interposition of their bodies, the intense dialogues, the creativity of their actions and the strength of their relationships, expresses great poetic and political energy.
The film ranges between different levels and moments with the harmonious rhythm of a poem, reaching its peak when it focuses on the young women protagonists of a struggle that is also feminine and feminist.

For all these reasons, together with the recognition of the value of denunciation of the work and the merit of spreading knowledge of an often forgotten reality, our jury has decided to award “Sudan, remember us”, by director Hind Meddeb.

CINEMA VISION 2030 AT DELPHI PALAST, BERLIN

From the third edition of Cinema Vision 2030,
"the advantage of an alliance between Letterboxd and the big screen, explained by David Larkin"

by Elisabetta Brunella

We already discussed this in the last issue of DGT online informer: Cinema Vision 2030 this year presented itself as a great opportunity for discussion between film professionals from different sectors, particularly between cinema exhibitors and other innovative businesses that have emerged in recent years and have developed especially during the pandemic.

This is the case, for example, with Letterboxd, the app invented in 2011 that has become "a global community hosting reviews from moviegoers." This is how David Larkin, Director of Corporate Operations, presented it in Berlin, explaining to exhibitors how and why Letterboxd can become their ally.

There are many reasons why this social community - which boasts big stars among its fans - is a tool for bringing people closer to the big screen. First and foremost, the fundamental characteristic of Letterboxd members is their passion for cinema, and those who love cinema want to see it on the big screen, as demonstrated by the in-depth statistics the company collects among its users. These users are often decidedly young and consider Letterboxd their film school. Essentially, from the exhibitors' perspective, it's a breeding ground for new viewers.

But the alliance between the social network and the big screen can also have more practical implications: Letterboxd knows what its members watch - or would like to watch - and has therefore begun collaborating with distributors. But it doesn't intend to stop there: it would like the collaboration to extend to movie theatres.

The time is ripe for this synergy: technology today allows cinemas to have more flexible programming, capable of reacting quickly to moviegoers' demand. Their interests and desires for watching movies are reflected on Letterboxd, and this can allow exhibitors to offer a more targeted offering. "And, mind you," Larkin emphasizes, "members of our community are generally very curious; they want to be the first to see films in movie theatres, but they don't limit themselves to the most recent or popular titles: on the big screen, they also ask for heritage films and great classics from the history of cinema.

Listening to these interests is a way for movie theatres to learn how to promptly meet audience needs: the alliance with Letterboxd can be the right tool to gain this competitive advantage.” This is particularly true for Europe, the second-largest geographic region in terms of number of Letterboxd participants. It is no coincidence that it has chosen to be a media partner of the Berlinale…
