This
is a modern fairy tale movie for children and young people. Lotte, 8-9 years
old, and her father Helge, who is the Queen’s bodyguard, move in with Kristin,
a former beauty queen, and her daughter Vendela. Kristin is extremely preoccupied
with bodies and appearances, and she tries to pass this fixation on to Vendela,
and by-and-by to Lotte as well. Kristin’s ambition is that Vendela becomes Little
Miss Norway at a beauty contest for children. This is a fairy tale movie in
a Roald Dahl setting, with elements from horror movies. Here we find the motherless
girl, the evil stepmother, a magic ointment that will make the world a more
evil place if the good forces are not victorious, and good old love and deceit.
