Prefazione all'edizione 1998

The European Film Industry under Analysis” (Bruxelles, 11 novembre 1996).

Preface to the 1998 edition

The Yearbook today: an essential component of the MEDIA Salles information system

The Statistical Yearbook, presented in advance at Eurovisioni 1998, contains the results of a year’s work focused on developing and improving the service offered by MEDIA Salles for gaining an increasingly in-depth knowledge of the European cinema industry.
The thoughts that emerged from  the Association’s Work Group 1, and which were taken up by the Executive Committee, have in fact led us to organise an information system that is tailor-made for players in the industry, thanks partly to the use of  tools such as Internet.
This system is based partly on the annual publication of statistics, collected in the now renowned and – we can say with satisfaction – eagerly expected Yearbook, and partly on the MEDIA Salles web site.

The 1998 edition, through its comparative tables, which present historical series of data from 1989 onwards, allows for a clear and immediate view of the cinema industry’s overall situation in 28 countries in Western, Central and Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean Rim. The national profiles, containing an in-depth analysis of these countries, are collected in a single volume that can also be consulted at the MEDIA Salles website.
For this section, which has been added to the comparative tables available on the MEDIA Salles site since as far back as 1995, we have chosen the PDF format, which allows the growing body of data collected in the Yearbook to be selected, viewed and downloaded with ease.
Synergy has also been developed with the most recent source of information on the European cinema industry, set up by MEDIA Salles: the “European Cinema On-line Database” on Internet.
In particular, a considerable part of the information contained in the Yearbook can now be “cross-referenced” and studied in depth, thanks to the opening of two new catalogues, yet to be completed, one of which is dedicated to the cinema theatres, the other to the exhibition companies.
As an example, the Database already makes it possible to identify, one by one, the cinemas that make up the total of cinema theatres in nations such as Belgium and the Netherlands and to locate extra data, such as the number of screens and their exhibitors.

MEDIA Salles research:  since 1992 at the service of companies and institutions

In the field of research and information, the aim of the choices made today remains identical to the original aim of the first statistical Yearbook of European cinema: to provide a means of gaining in-depth knowledge of the European cinema industry.
At that time, in 1992, the MEDIA Salles Yearbook filled an information gap that had often been the cause of  mistakes in evaluating the economic and social roles played by the “theatrical system” on the overall panorama of the cinema industry.
In its first edition, the Yearbook appeared as the basis for a broader research project on the cinema exhibition industry, the results of which have been collected in the White Book, “White Book of the European Exhibition Industry”.
By means of the White Book and the Yearbooks that have succeeded one another over these years2, including the 1995 “Special Centenary” edition, which dedicated a section to the history and the transformation of cinema theatres and
cinema-going, one of the intentions of MEDIA Salles has been to offer sources of information and knowledge to those European institutions that deal with policy-making in the sector of audiovisuals and especially the cinema.
The research work begun by MEDIA Salles and regularly carried out over the years in order to give an increasingly distinct picture of the European cinema industry’s many different aspects, has been widely acknowledged.  Eurostat itself, in its Methodological Manual (revised version 1.2), considers the Yearbook as a primary source of information; for a considerable number of entries, the MEDIA Salles publication is quoted as a potential source (Work Group “Audiovisual Services”, Luxembourg 10-11 October 1996).  Several of the tables in the Yearbook have also been used in the DGX report of the European Commission “The European Film Industry under Analysis” (Brussels, 11 November 1996). Moreover MEDIA Salles is one of the bodies that has been contacted by the European Audiovisual Observatory, with a view to setting up a database on box office takings from films in Europe (Strasbourg, 12 September 1997).
There are a growing number of research initiatives in the audiovisual sector today, and there are also signs of a growing awareness on the part of institutions of the pivotal role played by cinema theatres in exploiting films: this is a context in which MEDIA Salles is more committed than ever to fine-tuning and deepening the analysis of its European Cinema Yearbook. It is in this perspective that the re-designing of the Yearbook’s production structure and the adoption of a new data processing programme installed in the Milan offices are to be seen – measures which aim, amongst other things, to develop synergy with the “European Cinema On-line Database”.

The Yearbook in 1998

For 1998 we have again adopted the “wide screen” format and the new structuring of the data, which represented the main innovation in the 1997 edition. However, there is no lack of innovations in 1998, either.
The data on Estonia, which we are publishing for the first time, together with the new comparative tables of the main indicators for Central and Eastern European exhibition, are proof of our efforts to extend research in an area which, for the cinema industry too, is going through a phase of distinct and rapid transformation.  The introduction of a comparative table showing number of tickets sold in relation to number of seats, contributes to the aim of providing more elements for evaluating the efficiency of the European cinema theatres as a whole.
The revised and now larger section that “photographs” the situation of multiplexes in Europe (updated at June 1998) intends to provide companies and institutions with a clear and up-to-the-minute database, which can be used for reflection and as a basis for future plans.
Lastly a comment summing up the year’s results helps the reader to pick out the main trends in the sector from the overall data.
Work on the 1998 edition has been carried out by the same team as that of the 1997 edition. Dr Joachim Ph. Wolff, former senior lecturer in micro-economics at the Technological University Delft, and Paola Bensi, an expert on statistics at Milan’s Catholic University, and who is responsible for the new structure of the contents adopted in 1997 and for its up-dating, have acted as our consultants.
Under the supervision of Elisabetta Brunella, Secretary General of MEDIA Salles, data has been collected and processed by Paola Bertinotti, a graduate in corporate economics at Milan’s Bocconi University, while Alessia Sartirana, a graduate in modern letters at the University of Genoa, has co-ordinated the data processing and the editorial work. They are also to be thanked for the publication of the full edition of the Yearbook on Internet and the co-ordination with the “European Cinema On-line Database”.

The European Film Industry under Analysis” (Bruxelles, 11 novembre 1996).
